Book Review / City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

Below is the description for book 1 in the Mortal Instruments series (so it does not spoil the story for those who have not read the start of this series....

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

My Review

What I loved about this story...
I am not sure what you call it but this series definitely has a hold on me.  I really enjoyed City of Bones, the first book in the series, and was definitely intrigued to find out more about the characters and what they are up to in this story.  Of course there is a lot that I can't say as this is book two in a series but what I can say is that there is a 'relationship' going on in this story which I don't necessarily agree with as it is a bit of a taboo but I get the feeling there is more to this story than meets the eye and there is a lot of the story that we don't know yet that might put a different spin on the 'relationship'.

Although I can't pinpoint exactly what it is (as I mention below) but I seem to be under a City of Bones spell and can't stop reading this book.  Maybe it it is in the intrigue of what is potentially going to happen...  I am now

What I was not fond of with this story...
The second book in a series is usually 'make or break' for me.  It is the decider as to whether I want to read the rest of the series.  This book two is slightly unusual in the fact that I really enjoyed the story but felt that it went very slow although there were aspects throughout the story that kept my interest and certainly the latter half of the story got a lot better than the first half.  This was one of those books that I could have very easily put down and never picked up but there seemed to be something about it, both the writing and the prospect of what is to come, that keeps me reading and I am certainly intrigued to pick up the next book in the series (book 3, City of Glass) as I have read some reviews that say that apparently it gets a lot better from book 3 onwards.
